I’m a technology analyst and journalist working in the computer industry. Specifically, I cover microprocessors, semiconductor technology, and embedded systems (nowadays called Internet of Things). I’ve been writing “nerd porn” since the 1980s, and a weekly column for Electronic Engineering Journal since 2008.
From 2001 until 2018 I ran the analyst firm Silicon Insider, where we offered “technical insight with business relevance.” Our clients were mostly investors, buy-side analysts, VCs, and engineering managers looking for an insider’s view into the world of semiconductor, IP licensing, and computer technology.
I used to have a real job. I was previously the president and CEO of a small, publicly traded microprocessor IP (intellectual property) company, after serving as the Senior Vice President of Marketing for another microprocessor-licensing company. Before that, I headed up electronics development at robotics company Adept Technology, and I was a hardware/software engineer at Force Computers GmbH in Munich, Germany.
Books & Publications
I’m the author of seven books and a few thousand magazine articles. My first book was about advanced programming techniques for Intel x86 processors. Later on, I wrote PCs Made Easy (a Crown Books bestseller), Windows NT Training Guide, and Essential Guide to Semiconductors, among others.
I was the Editor-in-Chief of Microprocessor Report, a multiple winner of the Computer Press Award for Best Newsletter. Before that, I was Editor-in-Chief of UBM’s glossy monthly magazine Embedded Systems Design (previously called Embedded Systems Programming). I was the conference chairman of the semi-annual Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) events, as well as for two annual Silicon Valley showcases for new microprocessors, the Microprocessor Forum and the Embedded Processor Forum.
I live and work in scenic Pacific Grove, California (“Most Romantic Town in America,” according to Life magazine), tucked in between Pebble Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Monterey. I got my competition auto racing license in 2001 and became an enthusiastic Formula Ford racer at great racetracks like Laguna Seca, Sears Point, and Thunderhill.
I have an accomplished and stunningly attractive wife, two overachieving kids, and an apparently brain-damaged opossum living under the house.
